If you only have wifi the wifi is going to sleep with the computer and so it can not receive any signals. if you have an ethernet cable it can send a small electric signal that wakes the computer up without the need for the rest of the computer to be running. I hope this explanation makes it a bit more clear what wake on lan actually is and what it can do. I did not buy wake on lan because the Mini is connected to the internet via airport (not a cable) and I read it would not work in that case.
